About ATC-6
Up to now there are 30 so called Mega cities (the city having more than 10 million populations) in the world. Among them, 18 are located in Asia. It is thus anticipated that activities related to urban development are very important to Asia region. Design and construction of underground works, such as deep excavations and basement and foundation connected to urban development thus play important role in this modern society and can’t be ignored.
Further, it has been shown that metro system is an effective way to relieve traffic in urban area. Metro of course have become very important infrastructure in most of major cities in northeast Asia, such as Tokyo and Osaka in Japan, Seoul in Korea and Beijing and Shanghai in China. In Southeast Asia, metro system has first appeared in Hong Kong and Singapore in 80’s and then in Taipei since 90’s. Bangkok has the 1st underground MRT Line since beginning of 21st century and its extension is under- construction currently. Since 2011, construction of the 1st MRT (SBK) line in Kuala Lumpur has started and up to now the progress of underground section is more than 50%. Even in Jakarta, the phase 1 of north- south line has commenced to construct since August 2013 and expect to be completed for operation in 2018. In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, construction of large- scale metro system are also implemented. In Middle Asia and South Asia, metro systems have been constructed in Delhi, Dubai, Kolkata, Bangalore etc. in the past 10 years and design and construction of more underground metro systems are expected to start shortly in Mumbai and Gujarat in India. Also in India, continues from previous works, phase 2 of Chennai, Jaipur and Bangalore metro are expected to be carried out. More cities in Middle east such as Layard in Saudi Arabia and Doha in Qatar also have large- scale plan in metro works to be delivered in the near future.
As indicated above, metro becomes a critical element of a modern city in Asia. Due to difficult surface and underground conditions, high- level risks are recognized for construction of metro works and it is thus that accidents caused by metro construction can thus lead to severely financial loss and casualty. It is thus indicated that geotechnical engineering related to design and construction of metro works (or named “metro geotechnics”) shall be further studied in order to reduce risk so sustainable urban environment can thus be developed and protected.
Considering reasons stated above, topics which will be further examined and studied here are:
(1) Deep excavation
(2) Metro geotechnics
(3) Urban renovation geotechnics
